Knowing the answer to this question is imperative for accurate discernment and for having the tools we need to fight in the spiritual war at large, however the general consensus in theological doctrines, even by St. Thomas Aquinas whom I admire, believes in what I call the demonic observational theory in which demons just observe us from our actions and words, but can't read minds. Not only theologians, but most of the internet seems to confirm that Satan and demons cannot read minds, and although this is very comforting and safe feeling, I am 100% certain this is false and nowhere in the bible does it say that demons can't read thoughts. Please hear me out.

You cant just observe someone from the outside and know how to tempt them with 100% accuracy. Think about how many of us present a completely different picture of ourselves to those outside of ourselves and keep an inner secret dialogue and thoughts that is out of character from how those in the world experience us. Sure, a lot of have the same tendencies, but the devil still could not tempt us accurately just by mere external observation. If he did not have the ability to read our minds his temptations and suggestions would be misfiring inside our thoughts constantly and it would soon become very obvious to everyone that there is a disordered voice inside of our heads that is not our own. More than likely at that point God would not allow those misfirings to happen. But the truth is most of us don't even notice the devil in our heads. That's because hes been subtly tempting you since you were a small child and you've never noticed. He also wants to stay hidden and unnoticed in there where he can do the most damage. If he was too obvious we would rebuke him with ease.

The devil masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), but he also masquerades as your own will. He has read your mind all your life and knows your strengths and weaknesses since the time that you were a baby. He will then mirror your mind and thoughts and insert his voice inside your mind to mimic and sound exactly like yours and then you wind up believing that it is your will and your decision to fall into sin. Don't get me wrong, often times it is by our own will to fall into sin, but the devil expands on those desires and amplifies them greatly. Ultimately we are held accountable for our actions whether tempted or not. The devil knows this perfectly well and uses it to his advantage.

If you are trying to become holy or even a saint and you hear a voice that is responding to your silent thoughts or prayers in a way that makes it very clear to you that the voice is reading your mind, but is slightly giving you a bad vibe and you immediately assume its God, because well "demons cant read minds" then you are running the risk of not running your discernment filter when you hear voices respond to your thoughts in your head. Which is detrimental, because if it is in fact a demon, your actions following that voice is ultimately against God's will and if you tell people what you believe "God" said then ultimately it causes a bunch of misinformation to run rampant in our church, which is something the devil wants.

Here is a small example of this: Have you ever had a great idea in thought or reverie only to be immediately followed by some fear or paranoia about that same idea? It is not just your own fears. This is how the devil discourages people from making a difference in this world. He does this all the time and has been doing this to me all my life unnoticed, until one day I figured him out.

It has become rather obvious to me that other than the demonic observational theory, and fear, one of the main reasons why people often believe that Satan and his demons cannot read minds is because they don't believe he is omniscient and omnipresent like God, which is in fact true, but the devil and his demons don't need to be is omniscient and omnipresent to read minds. They just need to have a tiny spec of similarities and smaller equivalents to some of Gods powers that were an innate part of the fallen angels make-up when they were first created as heavenly beings.

This phenomenon of angelic and fallen angel beings being able to read minds can be described as kind of like a radio antenna that can access many different "radio stations" and our minds are like those little radio stations. God has a bigger "radio antenna and range" of course that reaches out to the entire universe, earth, heaven, hell and beyond because he is God and the biggest spirit of all, while the other angels and fallen angels are vastly smaller in comparison and have a vastly smaller "radio antenna" that can only reach in the immediate neighborhood of wherever they are. The range of the immediate neighborhood of where they are is still quite expansive compared to the size of their spiritual bodies.

When angelic and fallen angel beings are on earth their span of powers is at the very least the entire span of the earth and all its inhabitants. We know this because, there is not a single person on this planet who is untouched by Satan and his demons, but I don't know exactly know how far their "antenna" reaches, all I know is that the reach is significantly smaller than God's and that heaven is being kept far enough away from Satan and his fallen angels who dwell on earth to keep out of their reach. Satan could in theory try to fly to reach heaven and read the minds of heaven's humanly inhabitants, but God and his angels would stop him in his tracks and he would never be able to do this successfully.

It's important to note that God can read the minds of angels, fallen angels, human spirits and animals. Angels and fallen angels cannot read God's mind or each others minds, but can read the minds of smaller human spirits and animals that are within their range. If the angels flew far enough away from earth and closer to heaven, they would not be able to read our thoughts for the time that they were far enough away, but could instead read the thoughts of those human spirits in heaven. If they left heaven to come visit earth the opposite would be true. God in contrast has access and range everywhere and everything all at once.

In my own experience and when I was first getting attacked by the devil, I would often hear the devil respond to my private thoughts very specifically, so it was very obvious to me that he was reading my exact thoughts and responding to them in a second of time. If it happens to me it happens to everyone and this information is vital for discernment and the spiritual battle that is ongoing in this world.
